Short answer

A barbershop website in New Zealand costs anywhere from about NZ$15 a month (a DIY builder you set up yourself) to NZ$20,000 or more (a custom agency build). Most small shops land in one of four bands:

  • DIY builder: about NZ$15 to NZ$45 a month, plus your own time.
  • Freelancer: about NZ$1,500 to NZ$5,000 up front, plus hosting and changes.
  • Agency: about NZ$5,000 to NZ$20,000+ up front, plus maintenance.
  • Managed subscription: about NZ$35 to NZ$180 a month, with design, hosting and updates included.

The number that matters is the five-year total, including booking software, card fees and your own hours. That is where the options separate.

The four ways to get a barbershop website

1. Build it yourself on a website builder

Website builders let you drag a site together from a template. Entry plans in New Zealand typically run about NZ$15 to NZ$45 a month.

Check which plan you actually need. Taking bookings or payments is often only included in the higher tiers.

Good for: a barber who enjoys tinkering and has evenings free. Watch for: speed, mobile layout and local SEO are left to you.

2. Hire a freelancer

A local freelancer typically charges NZ$1,500 to NZ$5,000 for a small business site, with ongoing care often NZ$50 to NZ$200 a month if you want them to keep it updated and secure.

Good for: a shop that wants a personal touch and has a freelancer it trusts. Watch for: what happens when they get busy, move on or stop answering. Get the logins and the domain in your name from day one.

3. Hire an agency

NZ agencies generally quote NZ$5,000 to NZ$20,000+ for a custom build, with maintenance around NZ$100 to NZ$500 a month. You get strategy, custom design and project management.

Good for: a multi-site group or a brand with specific needs. Watch for: for a single barbershop most of that spend goes on process, not on anything a customer standing on the footpath will notice.

4. A managed (subscription) website

You pay monthly and the provider designs, hosts and maintains the site. General-purpose NZ subscription web design is typically NZ$49 to NZ$179 a month. Barbershop-specific services can come in lower because the design work is repeatable.

Good for: owners who want a proper site without becoming a web designer. Watch for: contract length, who owns the domain, and whether booking is included or another subscription on top.

The costs that aren't on the quote

These are the lines that turn a "cheap" website into an expensive one.

  • Domain name. A .co.nz or .nz usually costs NZ$23 to NZ$50 a year. Cheap first-year prices often renew higher.
  • Booking software. If the site can't take bookings itself, you'll pay for a separate booking tool. These are usually a monthly subscription, often charged per staff member, so the cost grows with your team.
  • Card fees. Taking payment online always costs a percentage. Stripe's standard NZ rate for domestic cards is 2.65% + 30c. Check whether your provider adds its own fee on top.
  • Marketplace commission. Some booking marketplaces charge a one-off commission on new clients they send you. Read the fee page before you sign up.
  • Changes. New prices, a new barber, holiday hours. If every change is a paid job or an evening of your time, count it.
  • Photos. Real photos of your shop and your work do more than any template. Budget for them, even if that is just a good phone and a quiet Monday.
  • Your own hours. A DIY site that takes you 30 hours to build and an hour a month to maintain isn't free. Price your time at what a cut earns you.

Five-year cost comparison

A website is a five-year decision, so compare five-year totals. The examples below use the published ranges above at sensible points. They are illustrations, not quotes. Your numbers will differ.

Buzz is our product, so weigh our numbers accordingly. What they show is the shape of the market: an up-front build is the most expensive way to own a small-shop website, and a DIY plan is only cheap if your time is free.

What a barbershop website actually needs

Most of your visitors are on a phone, nearby, deciding in seconds whether to come in. Whatever you pay, the site should do these things. If a quote doesn't cover them, ask why. For real examples, see barbershop website examples.

  • Hours and an "open now" signal visible without scrolling.
  • Tap-to-call and one-tap directions to the door.
  • A price list. Customers compare on price before they compare on anything else.
  • Real photos of your work and your shop, not stock images.
  • Booking, or a clear "walk-ins welcome" if that is how you work.
  • Fast on mobile data. Google treats a main-content load time of 2.5 seconds or less as good.
  • The same name, address and phone number as your Google Business Profile. See our Google Business Profile guide.
  • Easy updates. Changing a price or holiday hours should take minutes, not an invoice.

Seven questions to ask before you pay anyone

  1. Whose name is the domain registered in? It should be yours, or you should have a written right to it.
  2. What is the total monthly cost after launch, including hosting, updates and booking?
  3. Is there a minimum term, and what does it cost to leave?
  4. Can I change prices, hours and photos myself? How long does it take?
  5. What fees apply to online payments, and where does the money land?
  6. Who fixes it when it breaks, and how fast?
  7. Can I see three live sites you've built, on my phone, right now?

FAQ

How much does a barbershop website cost in New Zealand?

In 2026, DIY builders run roughly NZ$15 to NZ$45 a month plus your own time. Freelancers usually charge NZ$1,500 to NZ$5,000 up front, agencies NZ$5,000 to NZ$20,000 or more, and managed subscription websites NZ$35 to NZ$180 a month. Add a domain (about NZ$23 to NZ$50 a year), booking software if it isn't included, and card fees on online payments.

Do I need a website if my barbershop has Instagram and a Google Business Profile?

You can trade without one, but a website is the only listing you fully own. It gives Google a consistent source for your name, address, hours and prices. It is what your Google Business Profile's website button points to, and it can take bookings and payments without a marketplace commission.

Who should own my barbershop's domain name?

You should, or you should have a written right to have it transferred to you on request. Ask any provider who the registrant is before you pay. A domain registered in someone else's name is the hardest thing to get back when you leave.

What is the cheapest way to get a barbershop website in NZ?

The cheapest cash option is a free or entry-level builder plan you build yourself. It is usually not the cheapest in total, because your hours, a booking tool and ongoing updates are extra. Compare the five-year total, not the first month.
